Welcome to the Guardian Program
At Broadway Poodles & Doodles, we believe every breeding dog deserves to live as a cherished family member. Our Guardian Program allows our breeding dogs to be raised in loving, local homes while remaining an important part of our breeding program. It’s a wonderful partnership that benefits both our guardian families and our dogs.
Guardian families receive one of our exceptional puppies for a discounted fee, a significant savings compared to the full purchase price. While your dog lives with you as a beloved family member, Broadway Poodles & Doodles retains breeding rights for the agreed-upon length of the contract.
Guardian families are responsible for providing a safe, loving home and covering routine expenses, including food, annual veterinary care, grooming, and everyday needs. Broadway Poodles & Doodles covers all breeding-related expenses, including health testing, reproductive care, pregnancy care, whelping, and all costs associated with producing and raising litters.
Once your dog’s breeding career is complete and all contractual obligations have been fulfilled, full ownership will be transferred to the guardian family at no additional cost.
Qualifications Home Qualifications
To be considered for our Guardian Program, applicants must:
Have a securely fenced yard
Have previous dog experience or a solid understanding of responsible dog ownership
Be committed to proper training and early socialization
Provide excellent nutrition, regular exercise, routine veterinary care, and a loving home.
Maintain regular grooming, whether professionally or at home, including consistent brushing and bathing.
Live within 45 miles of the Yuba-Sutter area.
Be flexible when your dog is needed for health testing, breeding, pregnancy care, whelping, or other breeding-related appointments.
Not own an intact dog of the opposite sex. (For example, guardian homes for breeding females may not have an intact male, and guardian homes for breeding males may not have an intact female.)
Female Guardian Dog:
Once your guardian female is physically mature, she will be bred on an approved heat cycle, typically beginning with her second heat. Approximately 30 days after breeding, we will perform an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. About one week before her expected due date, she will come to our home, where she will remain throughout whelping, raising, and weaning her puppies. This typically lasts 6–8 weeks. During this time, guardian families are always welcome to schedule visits with their dog.
Guardian families are responsible for monitoring their dog’s heat cycles and notifying Broadway Poodles & Doodles as soon as signs of a heat begin. They must also ensure their female is never exposed to an intact male during her heat cycle unless breeding has been arranged by Broadway Poodles & Doodles. Our females are typically retired between 4 and 6 years of age after producing 3–4 carefully planned litters, depending on the individual dog’s health and well-being. Once she has completed her breeding career, Broadway Poodles & Doodles will have her spayed at our expense. Full ownership will then be transferred to the guardian family, and she will continue living the rest of her life as your cherished family companion.
Male Guardian Dog:
Once your guardian male has reached maturity, he will be ready to participate in our breeding program.
When a breeding is planned, Broadway Poodles & Doodles will coordinate with the guardian family to arrange a convenient time for him to come to us for breeding. Because breeding dates are determined by a female’s heat cycle, appointments may be scheduled on short notice. Guardian families must be flexible and willing to make their dog available when needed. Most breeding visits require only a short stay. Guardian families are responsible for ensuring their male is never allowed access to an intact female in heat unless the breeding has been arranged by Broadway Poodles & Doodles. They should also understand that intact males may temporarily display normal breeding-related behaviors, such as increased interest in female dogs or scent marking, during their breeding career. Our males are typically retired between 5 and 7 years of age, depending on their health and breeding career. Once retired, Broadway Poodles & Doodles will have him neutered at our expense. Full ownership will then be transferred to the guardian family, and he will spend the rest of his life as your beloved family companion.
Additional Guardian Requirements:
We ask that your puppy’s coat be allowed to grow out until 6–12 months of age before receiving a full haircut. Routine bathing, brushing, nail trims, sanitary trims, and face/feet trims are encouraged during this time.
Guardian families must be flexible and available when Broadway Poodles & Doodles needs to schedule pick-up for breeding appointments, health testing, professional photos, or other breeding-related purposes.
Guardian families are responsible for all routine veterinary care and any non-breeding-related medical expenses, including wellness exams, illness, injuries, and emergencies. Broadway Poodles & Doodles covers all breeding-related veterinary care, reproductive expenses, and spay/neuter at retirement.
Guardian families agree to maintain their dog’s health through proper nutrition, regular exercise, routine grooming, and preventative
